FolaPro
features a metabolically active, natural form of folate called L-5-methyl
tetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). Unlike folic acid, L-5-MTHF requires no extra
steps to be absorbed and utilized by the body. This is important, because
the ability to metabolize folic acid is impacted in up to 40% of the population
due to genetic variability. It is suggested that these individuals would
benefit from supplementation with the active metabolite, L-5-MTHF, over
other forms of folate. Among its many benefits, L-5-MTHF promotes healthy
homocysteine levels, is the only folate metabolite that crosses the blood-brain
barrier, and is intimately linked to nucleotide synthesis. FolaPro features
the natural L-isomer form of 5-MTHF, exclusive to Metagenics, which is preferred
over the unnatural D-isomer or mixed DL-isomer forms because it is the only
isomeric form used by the body.
